Sagelands 2008 Dovel Vineyards Dry Rosé. $12
We’ve had some remarkable rosé wines this year; this may just be our favorite.
Sagelands Vineyard 2008 Dovel Vineyard/Wahluke Slope Dry Rosé is made from Malbec, which is a bit unusual for a Washington State wine.
Nose: The immediate hit is strawberries, even before you raise the glass to your nose. There are also floral tones and some honeysuckle. Very nice.
Taste: Almost tropical with strawberries, pineapple and passion fruit. Really wonderful flavors that become more subtle and varied as it’s opened more. It’s quite dry, yet fruity at the same time.
Food: We first paired it with smoked salmon from Pure Seafood in the Pike Place Market. (No, that’s not the one you always see where they throw the fish around; this is north a bit and has the best seafood in Seattle. Their smoked salmon is phenomenal.) The food brought the fruit forward with more passion fruit coming out. Nice complexity, too.
We then paired with with pan fried scallops and asparagus. The wine might have been a little big for something so delicate, but it was still nice. We finished off with dark chocolate covered almonds, which really brought out the strawberry — excellent.
The winery recommends this dry rosé with grilled white-fleshed fish, a roasted turkey sandwich or fresh salad greens topped with goat-cheese crostini.
A great, unique rosé.
